OTC, re: graduate education being a UMC thing, would argue that used to be the case, but these days it depends on how you define UMC. Labor earnings have been shell-acked and there is a general recession hangover. Plus earnings post degree are generally not high, period, it takes a few years to get anything resembling renumerative work for your degree, and that process got AXED PDQ if you graduated in the middle of the Great Recession Rape.
These days, everyone wants to go back to school, and is going back to school, and I am talking rural kids in Michigan, I am talking Hispanic kids that grew up in neighborhoods with 50% child poverty that managed to get out of there. With the ever-increasing housing prices in the major cities, the ever-increasing cost of health-care, the unstable jobs, etc, there feels like no stability, no future, and you want to take every possible advantage you can get.
Plus income inequality gets even more exaggerated by this sort of Social Darwinian process when one relatively wealthy person gets together with another relatively wealthy person. The fiancé and I are going to have a combined household income of $200,000 in a few years….and tbh, my experience is colored by the recession, so since it’s not a super-stable income flow, my attitude is to create a warchest large enough to fight the Thirty Years War.
Another thing is that internal raises are generally crap. And if you want a new job, you want a fantastic-looking resume.
